ย้อนกลับไปเมื่อ 2 เดือนก่อน ผมได้มีโอกาสเดินทางไปยังเมืองบอสตัน รัฐแมสซาชูเซตส์ เมืองที่มีประวัติศาตร์มากมายของประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา เพื่อไปขอคารวะปรมาจารย์ผู้คร่ำหวอดในวงการ Vintage Clothing : Bobby Garnett หรือชื่อในวงการคือ Bobby from Boston ชายผู้เป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้ดีไซน์เนอร์ชื่อดังหลายคนเช่น Ralph Lauren หรือ Thom Browne โดย 6 เดือนก่อนหน้านั้นผมได้พบเขาที่นิวยอร์ค และชวนผมมาเยี่ยมชมโกดังประวัติศาสตร์เสื้อผ้าของเขา โกดังของเขาต้องนั่งรถไฟ ออกไปจาก Boston 1 ชั่วโมง อยู่ที่เมืองที่ชื่อว่า ลินน์(Lynn)
การไปครั้งนี้ได้เปิดหูเปิดตามาก เพราะประเทศของเราไม่ค่อยมีเสื้อผ้าตะวันตกมือสองในยุคก่อนสงครามโลกเท่าไรนัก ไม่ต่างอะไรจากการไปดิสนีย์แลนด์ ซึ่งผมไม่มีโอกาสและ ค่อนข้างเลยวัยที่อยากไปมามากแล้ว
ในระหว่างที่เยี่ยมชมโกดัง ก็ไปสะดุดตาไอ้สิ่งนี้เข้า “Flarico Athletic Supporter” มันเป็นกระจับไว้สำหรับเล่นกีฬา ใหม่เอี่ยม ใต้กล่องเขียนว่า 1898 , มันอายุ 117 ปีแล้ว ผมจึงไม่ลังเลที่จะขอซื้อมาไว้เป้นส่วนหนึ่งของพิพิธภัณฑ์ส่วนตัวในอนาคต หลังจากที่กลับมาถึงประเทศไทย แล้วลองหาข้อมูล
Flarico เป็นบริษัทที่ผลิตกระจับอวัยวะเพศชายมาตั้งแต่ปี 1898 ผลิตกระจับในราคาที่สมเหตุสมผล มาพร้อมกับชิ้นส่วนพลาสติกที่ใช้ครอบ ( Cup ) ใช้ในกีฬาต่างๆ เช่น วิ่ง ว่ายน้ำ มวย หรือฟุตบอล รวมถึงผลิตอุปกรณ์ช่วยเหลือความปลอดภัยช่วงท้องอีกด้วย โดยผลิตด้วยวิธี เย็บด้วยเครื่องจักรโบราณ รายละเอียดที่น่าสนใจคือ กราฟฟิคดีไซน์บนป้ายยี่ห้อ และ เทคนิคการเย็บซึ่งไม่มีในปัจจุบัน
สิ่งที่สนุกคือการได้จินตนาการว่า เมื่อ 100 กว่าปีที่แล้วผู้คนเหล่านั้น ใช้ความคิดสร้างสรรค์ไปกับอะไรกัน รวมถึงการที่ไม่ต้องพยายามที่จะผลิตสิ่งของเพื่อแข่งขันด้านราคากัน เปรียบเทียบกับยุคปัจจุบันซึ่งมีของราคาถูกเยอะแต่คุณภาพไม่ได้เป็นที่น่าพอใจเท่าไรนัก
ทุกวันนี้ Flarico ยังคงผลิตของแบบเดิมๆ ด้วยวิธีการเดิมๆอยู่ เฉกเช่น 117 ปีที่แล้ว
Back to a few months ago. I had a chance to visited Boston, Massachusetts where there are full of American History, paying respected to grandmaster of Vintage “Bobby from Boston” (Bobby Garnett) who inspired numerous menswear designers such as Ralph Lauren or Thom Browne. 6 months before I met him in New York City invited me to visit his historical warehouse by 1 hour away by train to Lynn.
This visiting opened up my whole mind. Because where I was born is really difficult to get western outfits before WWI era but them. This was very Disneyland to me once I got there.
During the time in warehouse. There was noticed this thing “Flarico Athletic Supporter” is jockstrap for athletic. It’s brand new. It’s shown 1898 underneath. It’s already 117 years!. I decided to bought it back to be one of my private archives. I searched for its information.
Flarico is a company which manufactured jockstrap since 1898 in reasonable price.fer their cup supporters, athletic supporters and running/swimming jockstraps.
they also manufactures abdominal supporters which are great for those with hernias or for extra abdomen support. The details I was interesting in is graphic design on package and sewing techniques.
The funnest point is imagination to what creativity has used from people since 100+ years ago. Including to not trying to challenge cost to manufacturing. I like to compare to now. There are a lot of cheap products which cannot meet standards (like the old days)
Today, Flarico is still manufacturing all same things like 117 years ago.
